Breakfast Club

  • Breakfast Club

St Mary’s School Breakfast Club aims to provide pupils of all ages with a safe and fun place to start their school day. Breakfast Club is open to all pupils from reception to Year 4 and we will do our best to accommodate the needs of your child. If your child has special needs/disabilities and requires extra support, please discuss this with Mr Hilton.

The club is informal and friendly, allowing children a choice as to how they start the day: some children like to wake up slowly, others prefer to get on and play. The club provides for both, quiet space (for reading, etc.)  as well as more structured activities. Play, rather than education, is at the heart of the club.

Each morning a nutritious breakfast is provided. The children are encouraged to help themselves, sit down and talk together, and then clear up their dishes: the idea is that our breakfast replicates as far as possible the atmosphere of a family meal. At the end of the session, the children are well fed, happy and ready to learn.

    Cost

The Governors have agreed to subsidise the cost of breakfast club to ensure all families are able to access this valuable resource.  Breakfast Club is 50p per session, which includes a choice of breakfast and fun activities. The cost does not change depending on the time you arrive or if you choose not to have breakfast with us.

    Registering with Breakfast Club

Only children who have fully registered with the school can  be accepted for Breakfast Club. Registration forms are available from the school office. Completed forms should be returned to the office prior to booking your child’s first session.

    Bookings/Payments

Places are allocated on a first come, first served basis to those that hand in their registration.

Payment should be made on a Monday for attendance that week.

Parents also have the flexibility to book ad-hoc sessions, where places are available, but the Breakfast Club requires a minimum of 24 hours notice.

    Non-Attendance

It is vital you inform us if your child is not attending the club, including through illness.

    Cancellations

If you wish to cancel a session your child is booked for please let us know as soon as you can, so that the places can be given to other children.

    Opening Times

We are open from 8:00-8.50am every weekday during term time (excluding Inset days). Your child(ren) can be dropped off at any time between these times via the gate at the back of the hall

We serve breakfast until 8.30am. Please ensure your child arrives in plenty of time if you wish them to eat with us.

    Signing In

It is vital that children attending Breakfast Club are signed in. Children in Reception, Year 1, 2 and must be signed in by their parents, whereas children in Years 3 and 4 can sign themselves in, with prior permission from their parents.

    Food

We provide unlimited food and we encourage all children to eat and drink something.
    Everyday we offer:

      • A choice of at least 3 different cereals.
      • Toast with a selection of spreads (e.g. Jams, Spread and Marmalade)
      • Fruit juice, milk (soya available on request) and water; hot chocolate in the winter.
      • Occasionally, the menu is supplemented with seasonal treats: different bakery goods; porridge; yoghurts; or foods from around the world to reflect the curriculum in school.

Where possible, any special diets will be catered for. We also look for opportunities for the children to cook and prepare food, as appropriate.

    Staff

The Breakfast Club is run by Mrs Purves and 2 other members of staff.

All members of staff are DBS-checked and hold appropriate qualifications. In addition, at least one other member of the school staff is always on site in case of emergency.

    Communication

We aim for each child to be happy and comfortable at the breakfast club. You can help us by providing as much information as possible about their likes/dislikes on their registration form.

Any information relevant to a particular day can be discussed briefly at drop-off. If you have any more detailed issues that you would like to discuss with club staff, then you can arrange a mutually convenient time for a telephone call or short meeting outside of club operation times.

As you will appreciate, the breakfast club staff have several children to look after and cannot pass individual messages on to class teachers. If there is something that the class teacher needs to know, then please write a note or call the school office.

If you have any concerns about the way the club is being operated, please raise them in the first instance, with the Headteacher, Mr Hilton.
