Christian Core Values

  • Our Core Values

The staff and pupils at St Mary’s base their learning and relationships on the our ‘5 Christian Core Values’ that are at the centre of our daily practice in school. The values were chosen by the children after careful thought and reflection. The 5 values are:

    Friendship (Nursery)

‘Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. You are my friends if you do what I command.’

    John 15:13-14

    Love (Reception)

    ‘The Lord is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and rich in love. The Lord is good to all;
he has compassion on all he has made.’

    Psalm 145:8-9

    Trust (Class 2)

‘Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me.’

    John 14:1

    Respect (Class 3)

‘I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.’

    John 15

    Wisdom (Class 4)

‘God gave Solomon wisdom and very great insight, and a breadth of understanding as measureless as the sand on the seashore.’

    1 Kings 4:29

Within school each class focuses on one of the values, so as the children go through the school they gain a real understanding of both the meaning of the values and what it is to practice them in our daily lives.

To help us in sharing the messages each class has an area dedicated to their value, where they can display work and examples of how they are showing the value in their practice. These areas also provide the children with areas for personal reflection that are valuable both in times of collective and individual worship.

Each class also has a display of their value in the hall, so we can share with everyone what the value means to the class. Displays in the hall also allow us to reflect on our practice in our worship with family and friends.

This year the children wanted new crosses to help them celebrate their values in class and provide a focus for class worship. The children worked with the staff to choose some very colourful crosses that show different events in the life of Jesus, but also have significance for the children as a class.
